Marion’s Womens Interview Podcast Launch Nov 15, 2007

Posted in audio book at 5:19 pm by admin

Happy Thanksgiving and greetings to Ruth Silver who is recovering from pace maker surgery!

My publisher Kent is posting the “Authentic Voices” Vol I audio book on iTunes and web site www.cdbaby.com. iTunes offers broad exposure but limited revenue. cdbaby offers great exposure and better revenue. He is busy with other web-related sales opportunities as well.

Kent also plans a future interview with me on his www.soundauthors.com web radio show.

I’m updating the web site with a women’s interview podcast and audio book focus. A Vol I/Vol II Sponsors-seeking Project budget and presentation is in-process with a template-based been-there-done-that potential for future stories.

A template for others who may want to try digital storytelling themselves. I have two people in mind…

My November/December “To Do List” focus maintains momentum for 2008:

* Zoe/Lovern/Sally/Jan/Ruth/Marion Vol I audio book interview “excerpts” podcast - 6 minutes total

* Ten 3-minute women’s Nov interviews podcast - then launch two to three weekly “voices” interviews

* Assess REALISTIC potential for audio book face-to-face sales - particularly the time it takes

* Track audio book marketing for Arizona libraries “niche”-local RV Parks and dealers-web-based sales-KOA “lead” interest

* Continue to seek out other women interested in these “voices” - including sharing their own

* Identify print book publisher Project opportunities through my Az Book Publishers Assoc contacts - need to gain print book experience in service to another author - before I tackle it for “Authentic Voices”

* Develop 1st 2008 quarter Volume II Project Plan and Budget for Sponsor support and feedback - include specific examples of the workload for a digital storytelling commitment

Marion’s Audio Book Sales Launch Nov 2, 2007

Posted in audio book at 1:16 pm by admin

Launch three priorities between now and Dec 31st:

1. “Authentic Voices” 2007 Volume I sales (how cool is that?!?)
2. Web podcast 3-to-5 minute interviews with women who RV
3. 2008 Volume II five story funding plan with podcast “excerpts”

Attending the Nov 3rd Independent Publishers Assoc “Hot Topics for Publishing Success” Program presented here in Phoenix as part of my local ABPA Chapter. Two areas of sales interest: Web, regional, national “niche” markets and non-traditional publishing media (i.e. web podcasts).

Will also be volunteering at the ABPA Booth for the mid-Nov AZ Library Conference (AzLA) also in Phoenix and have placed an “Authentic Voices” audio book ad in our ABPA/AzLA brochure. It will go out to 300 library purchasing agents in AZ.

It is time now to seek RV web-based marketing experience within the local Valley RV community.

Nov/Dec: Volume I sales/podcast interviews/Volume II funding:

* Vol I “feedback” critiques current approach - offers Vol II ideas
* Vol I sales launch focuses web site revisions on sales/podcasts
* Sales Rule: $1 prod = $1 mrkt - NO marketing - NO sales
* Free podcast interviews build “voices” and Vol I/II support
* Products: audio book/mp3 CD-download/print-E-book/video
* Holidays/RV high season - market “Authentic Voices” Volume I
* 2007/2008 Project Funding Budget presented to supporters
***REPEAT 2007 VOL I “PROJECT TEMPLATE” FOR 2008 VOL II***

2008 will be spent in marketing Vol I to secure the income to get going on Volume II. The 2008 funding I’m seeking will act as a “bridge” to keep Vol II production going while Vol I builds sales.

AVP’s web site Home Page reflects my long-term goal to capture AND share these women who RV “voices.” A Time Capsule will house individual stories.

Bridge funding idea: Adopt-a-Story…Adopt-a-Product Step…

Marion’s Post-RVW Lodi October 19, 2007 Entry

Posted in digital storyteller at 3:22 pm by admin

RVW Conventions are BUSY - I had to come home to rest up! Met with friends I hadn’t seen in awhile who live here in Phoenix. Saw a used 24 foot Class A that might actually work - once I’m retired.

Sold some audio books and got some wonderful feedback on the content. Elected not to have a Vendor Table this time but will think about it for the next Convention. Year-end steps:

1. Interview my core group of supporters so we can hear their thoughts on the “Authentic Voices” audio book.

2. RVW Convention members heard about and purchased the audio book but I kept a low profile as a Convention “First Timer.”

3. Have a 2007/2008/2009 multi-media Project budget done that uses my web site blogs and podcasts for production details.

4. Pursue a video interview of the audio book participants once they’re all back in Phoenix - Ruth Silver arrived last week.

5. The “Authentic Voices” book is on-hold for now - will focus on 10 video interviews each in 2008/2009 - with 25 stories for the 2009 book.

6. Work with multi-media professionals for “Authentic Voices” Volume II in 2008 - develop local face-to-face sales options.

7. This “Women Who RV” Project honors a commitment made for me as a condition of my birth. My Mother would have enjoyed EVERY woman at the Convention who shared their RV travel stories.

This audio book definitely connects with those who have heard it. I can now focus much of my energy in getting it into the hands of other women who RV, the RV world here in the Valley and Internet sales through Kent.

In my “spare” time, I’ll be working on where the next 10 rving stories will come from - using multi-media video. I’d like to get one story done by year-end - the video interview of the 2007 audio book participants…?

“Attention to detail is an act of connection…” Julia Cameron. Thank you RVW for the wonderful “First Timer” connections!

Marion’s Pre-RVW Lodi October 5, 2007 Entry

Posted in digital storyteller at 3:20 pm by admin

Talk about *THISCLOSE* delivery: I picked up 100 dual CD sets of my “Authentic Voices” audio book yesterday and will pick-up the other 200 sets this afternoon at 4:45 PM - 15 minutes before they close!

Cuttin’ it pretty close after a 9 month multi-media Project. I leave for Lodi Monday morning at 8 AM. Now the REAL work begins…will anyone be interested?

One of my fascinations with a web site is how rich it is in its potential for communicating. For example, how to:

1. Recognize my core group of supporters who have deepened my respect for their commitment to my work - beyond each audio book gifted to them?

2. Let Lodi-bound RVW Convention members know about the audio book and their future of sharing stories…with each other?

3. Provide a simple 2007/2008/2009 multi-media Project budget that reflects the dollars behind the budget? AND the expertise that goes with it? A clue: Follow the blogs and the podcasts…

4. Determine the viability of a video interview of the audio book participants for their impressions of this multi-media Project - given Ruth Silver is on her way back to Phoenix due to health issues and will not be at Lodi?

5. Generate interest and funding support for the planned 4th quarter “Authentic Voices” book that could include the video?

6. Learn from this 2007 multi-media Project while finding local multi-media professionals (through the AZ Book Publishers Association) to enrich the 2008 “Authentic Voices” Volume II?

7. Focus attention back to the Home Page that shelters the work that guided me to this path and keeps me focused on the future? I am honoring a commitment made for me as a condition of my birth…

The Phoenix Mercury are the 2007 WNBA Champions - what a hoot!

Talk about cuttin’ it close…I leave for the mid-October Lodi, Calif RVW Convention Oct 8th. The “Senior Women Who RV” audio book is JUST now going into CD duplication production.

Listened to the two CD Masters this morning to ensure their accuracy and laughed out loud again at the thoughts offered by those interviewed. It’s a neat feeling to spend time with these women - as though we’re conversing over a glass of fine wine.

End-of week, end-of-month and end-of quarter always encourage a look back to where you’ve come from and a look forward to where you’re going. With little time left to promote the new audio book before Lodi, I’ll stay focused on updating my multi-media web site next week.

The Internet is THE infrastructure needed to leverage Project communication and fundraising. The excitement of seeing the new website in early April, the series of May through July interviews, the VERY focused audio editing in August (160 hours!), the shift to a production focus in September and the October Convention has kept me hopping. Will there be a (funded) book in 4th quarter…?

Julia Cameron’s absolutely right about a ruthless truth: Artists are spiritual sharks and have to keep moving or sink to the bottom and die. So I joined the Arizona Book Publishing Association earlier this month. I’m very excited about doing this work for women who RV and also helping others on their book and multi-media Projects. Turns out seven years of printing experience may still be valuable after all.

Thank you to ALL the friends and professionals who have supported this Project from the beginning of the year. Our audio book “production” is a success. Its marketing “impact” will be decided by others.

I wish my Mother were still alive to hear these voices and for us to hear her voice…

Excerpts of June 22nd Interview of Marion Orem by Sally Exworthy

Posted in digital storyteller at 7:29 pm by admin

June 22nd Interview Transcriptions: Two Chapter Excerpt

This two Chapter excerpt reflects Sally’s interview “flow” - particularly her skill in incorporating my responses while not losing her original interview goals. She picks up my story at the point where the “An Authentic Voice” audio podcast ends.

Chapter I: “People Need to be Heard…”

sally-interviewing-marion-chapter-i-july-5-2007.doc

Chapter II: “First Time RVers…”

sally-interviewing-marion-chapter-iii-july-5-2007.doc

I’ve included the transcript for these excerpts for those who might want to read along as they listen to the audio Chapter I/II podcast excerpts.

For those of you interested in HOW audio editing gets done: I used the transcripts of the audio interviews to do ALL of the editing for the audio book - highlighted the content I did NOT want - the audio editor then deleted the highlighted audio - what’s left becomes the audio book.

My fourth quarter goal is to take this “Senior Women Who RV” multi-media Project to my local video/audio/Internet professional community to see how to do it better and faster in 2008!

Marion’s September 11, 2007 Entry

A quiet September 11th as will always be true…

What a multi-media learning curve this summer has been. I’m not even at the printed book phase yet! But I am looking at future Project work based on my professional background. So…

I joined the Arizona Book Publishers Association today after attending a number of their dinner meetings the past five months. It will put me in front of local professionals who are dealing with the impact of the Internet on ALL phases of book production including audio books.

My approach to this “Senior Women Who RV” Project has been built around the Internet infrastructure. The Sept/Oct RVW magazine has an article on web site benefits I was asked to write.

AUGUST in a nut shell for those tracking the “techie” stuff: Create a “highlighted” MASTER Transcript of the ORIGINAL five audio interviews (15 pages average each); delete “highlighted” audio file comments; remaining comments become AUDIO BOOK content; develop (and record) narrator audio book “story” sequence and narrator comments linking interview opening/closing thoughts; design audio book CD cover and CD digital formats (pricing impact); Sept audio book CD “burn” production; CDs ready for Lodi.

What a privilege these interviews have been in providing insight to issues I’m facing today - none of them RV-related. I can hear their voices - our laughter - Ruth’s deep sigh at the end of her comments…and soon others will hear them too.

Scary but true: Project funding focus is “on-hold” until the audio book is DONE. What comes first: The funding or the audio book…?

Plan to relax tonight with the Phoenix Mercury and Detroit Shock for the 4th game of the WNBA Championship at the Arena!

My Mother always cautioned me: “Be careful what you wish for…” An apt reminder for the current audio editing of five interviews transcriptions (75 pages) and audio files (160 minutes) this past week - phew.

A quick overview of this editing phase for those interested:

1. Complete Zoe and Lovern interviews review and timing.
2. Email Z & L four Chapters podcast audio files for transcription*.
3. Burn original interviews to CD audio files - mail to Kent.
4. Email edited transcripts to Kent - interviews story source.
5. Focus interviews final “themes” narration/transcription.
6. Decide Aug/Sept tasks - Marion/Kent responsibilities.
7. Initiate AVP fundraising while audio book editing is in-process.

* 2005 interview excerpts add resonance to the 2007 interviews

Ruth’s closing thoughts continue to haunt me as does her deep sigh toward the end. She took our interview well beyond an RV focus while keeping it firmly anchored in her key theme: Community…

The conversation’s direction is yours to guide - when you’re 88 years old.

Lovern’s comment: “You travel all over the world you see how little space most people live in…” has me looking at MY home a whole lot differently.

Zoe’s response to my question about her Class C purchase: “I called the Born Free dealer in Iowa and ordered one - over the phone…” pretty much sums her approach to that decision!

Jan and Sally’s August 6, 2007 podcast provides insight to a community’s impact - on them.

AVP’s August interviews will highlight some folks who have been very interested in this Project and these stories of women who RV. Their on-going support has been a key ally given “…I’m still the biggest fear I face.”

Finally, I look forward to Kent Gustavson’s audio book guidance through the next few weeks…

Marion’s August 2, 2007 Entry

An unexpected trip to southern California this week helps keep my life’s priorities in perspective.

My sister and brother-in-law face health issues that prompted a quick trip over from Phoenix to see how they’re doing. They’re doing as well as can be expected but not as well as we all would like…especially them!

I decided to bring Zoe and Lovern along for the ride - well their individual July “interviews” at least. What a hoot! I asked essentially the same questions of them both and got an overview of Zoe’s “Born Free compulsion” and Lovern’s reaction to it (from over 20 years ago) as well as their thoughts about RVW.

My original plan was to do some Zoe and Lovern audio editing while here in California. But then my Laptop started having intermittent disk problems so I focused on August planning instead.

I’ll be adding some excerpts from their July interviews to the AVP podcasts that complement Zoe and Lovern’s rving thoughts from our 2005 interviews. My current questions are on their page of the AVP web site: http://www.togivevoice.com.

Some surprising “rving themes” are starting to surface now that all five interviews are done. The trip back to Phoenix will provide me time to explore those themes…and how best to work with Kent Gustavson as he guides me through our August audio book editing process.

My complete interview is on the AVP web site podcast (audio) and blog (transcript) pages in seven short Chapters. The audio/blog purpose is to provide sufficient background on my “Senior Women Who RV Project” commitment for those RV women who are thinking of supporting AVP’s Project - financially.

Kent has suggested I serve as a narrator for the audio book stories of these women who RV. It’s an intriguing idea and one that would draw minimally on my current interview while weaving these rving stories into a coherent whole.

The concern for my California family’s health issues did not keep us from having a great visit together but it does help us keep life’s priorities in perspective…

August 6th: Spent the morning editing Zoe and Lovern transcripts - next step is to see how their thoughts interact with each other and the other three interviews content. Checkout the latest podcast: Jan and Sally and their local “cultural” experiences.
